There are numerous places to sail along the Scarborough beach due to the shifting nature of the sand bars that produce the waves. If you are new to the area, best to check out where the locals are before going out.

The current and shore break make the launch about the trickiest in Perth. Best to head quite down wind with the current first to build up speed before going out through the surf.

There are rewarding rides on offer to those who make the commitment and the jumping is not too bad either. Definitely for the more advanced sailor.

For people who sail in the Swan river and want better winds, South of Perth there is a great spot called Safety Bay.

Some people go there and never leave.

The wind is good over summer, there is grass to rig up on next to the Safety Bay Yacht Club.

You can sail on winds from any direction, but it is mostly known for strong steady seabreezes.

It is a safe place to sail on the ocean.

There is a sand bar that runs about eight hundred meters out into the bay and circles around so that there is an area of bay that is about five feet deep with no waves.

This makes Safety Bay a great place learn how to sail and waterstart.

If you sail over the sandbar there is great bump and jump sailing.

There are some waves out by an island off the coast.

If you are sailing south of the river then this is a great spot ,you will need a grass/weed fin at some times during the year, this is the only bad thing about Safety Bay.

The people are friendly and there is a lot of room.

Pelican Point is located on the north side of the Swan river.

It is great for beginners in the morning on the Easterly breeze and learning how to waterstart for intermediates in the afternoon.

It has a tendency to get very busy after work and on the weekends. DO NOT park illegally as the ranger is down often handing out $80 fines.

The Sea breeze (South-Westerly) blows onto a sandbar and makes it very safe because you can only get blown back on to it if you get into trouble.

There is grass to rig on and toilets.

It works well on sea breeze through Southerly to Easterly

Sailing Pelican Point on an Easterly

Thanks to Alec for this warning. Let's hope you read it before the same happens to you!

When sailing Pelican Point on any kind of easterly you need to give the area to the west (down river) to Jo Jo's restaurant and near the river bank a very wide birth. There are rocks which are hard to see as they lie just under the water line. I managed to ding up my brand new board and wreck the fin within 15 minutes on my first sail on it. I've been told I'm lucky, it could have been much worse and I'm not the first (naturally making me feel much better.
